On April 29, 2023, a plant-based cooking demo by SIFCare volunteers was held for Barangay Canaoay. This was a follow up from a Wellness Seminar last March 25, 2023 when we taught Lifestyle Changes for better health. Our host, Hon. Deny Ortega eagerly asked us to come back to share our knowledge in cooking healthier, more affordable meals.

This time more than 40 participants from Purok 1-7 attended. The event was aimed at promoting plant-based cooking using locally available and seasonal ingredients. The cooking demo featured the use of ingredients such as tofu, coconut (buko) meat, mung (mongo) beans, bread fruit (pakak), and jackfruit (hilaw na langka).

The participants showed great interest in learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet. They were excited to see how economical and easy it was to prepare plant-based meals using local ingredients. The cooking demo was conducted by SIFCare volunteers Marissa Tamayo, Khristine Tamayo, Vrinda Villamore, Krista Tolentino, and Rox Maynigo who demonstrated different cooking techniques and shared tips on how to incorporate more plant-based foods into daily meals.

The participants were impressed by the flavors and textures of the food. At the end of the program, we gifted them a poster on Healthy Swaps and gave recipe printouts.
Overall, the participants left with a better understanding of plant-based cooking. They were inspired to try converting their favorite dishes into plant based ones. The event served as a great opportunity to promote healthy eating and sustainable food choices in the community. Hon. Deny Ortega is looking forward to letting other barangays in San Fernando City benefit from this same seminar.
